Recap:

Ottawa met the Toronto Maple Leafs for the first time ever at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton. This neutral site game is the 2nd of 24 in the NHL this season. Over 7,000 fans were on hand to watch a game that lived up to the billing of a mismatch. The Maple Leafs scored on Ottawa goaltender Peter Sidorkiewicz early and often. Dave McLLwain (4), Wendell Clark (2), Mike Krushelnyski (4), and Glenn Anderson (2) all scored in the first 12 minutes to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Ottawa coach Rick Bowness decided to pull Sidorkiewicz in favor of Steve Weeks. The Senators responded with a Neil brady goal (2) to make the score 4-1. It was the closest Ottawa would come. Mike krushelnyski (5) scored 2 minutes later for his second of the game to make the score 5-1. Wendel Clark scored his own 2nd of the game (3) less than a minute into the 2nd period to claim a 6-1 lead. Steve Weeks held strong for Ottawa and stopped the bleeding, letting in 3 goals on 28 shots. Felix Potvin cruised to a 20 shot, 18 save 7-2 victory. Todd Gill had 4 assists and was a +3. The Maple Leafs' victory vaults them to 11 points, 1st in the Norris Division and the most points in the NHL.

Recap:

Vancouver continued a brutal trip out East visiting The Igloo in Pittsburgh to take on the defending Stanley Cup Champion Pittsburgh Penguins. Vancouver jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead by virtue of goals by Greg Adams (2) and Tom Fergus (2). Mario Lemieux brought the Penguins within 1 (6) with a powerplay goal with 3 minutes remaining in the opening frame. The Canucks would add the eventual game-winner off the stick of Greg Adams for his second of the game (3). Pittsburgh would anser back with a Kevin Stevens goal (4) to make the score 3-2 Canucks, but that was as close as the Penguins came. The 3rd period scoring was monopolized by Vancouver. Sergio Momesso, and 2 Cliff Ronning goals (4) iced the game and a solid Canuck effort on the road in a tough building. In addition to a pair of goals from each Adams and Ronning, Gerald Diduck and Geoff Courtnall each chipped in 2 assists. In the past 2 away games, Vancouver was able to capture 3 of 4 points from last year's Stanley Cup Final participants.

Recap:

The New Jersey Devils extended their winning ways (3 wins in 4 games) with a commanding 8-2 victory over the Hartford Whalers. Amidst another Devil offensive explosion, Stephane Richer had 2 goals (4) and an assist, Scott Stevens had 3 assists and finished at a +4, and Kevin Todd had a hat trick (4) and was a +3. Despite Murray Craven (4) opening the scoring for the Whalers, Hartford could not keep up with the Devils. It was an exceptionally bad night for Hartford goalie Sean Burke. He stayed in the entire game to face 38 shots and let in 8 goals. He only was able to save 2 of 8 GR opportunities. It is feast or famine for the Devils. They have 24 goals in their 3 wins, and only 9 goals in their 4 losses

Tampa Bay hosted the Edmonton Oilers in their second home game in franchise history. Rob DiMaio opened the scoring for the lightning with just under 3 minutes remaining in the first period, which the Lightning controlled all facets of the gameplay. Dave Manson scored on Edmonton's 4th shot of the game (2) to tie the game at 1. Craig Simpson scored on Edmonton's 5th shot on Wendell Young 2 minutes later with 8:15 left in the 2nd. Despite playing a marvelous game and holding a 20-10 edge in shots, the Lightning were trailing 2-1 in the 2nd intermission, however, they were going to start the 3rd period on the powerplay. Geoff Smith (2) would deliver a major blow to Tampa Bay's psyche as he would score an unassisted breakaway goal in the 1st minute of the 3rd. Chris Kontos (3) would score with 12 minutes left to bring the Lightning within 1, but Esa Tikkanen iced the game (5) with under 2 minutes left as Tampa Bay was pressing for the equalizing goal. Recap:

Two of the top teams in the Campbell Conference clashed at Joe Louis Arena, and did not disappoint. Steve Yzerman started off the game continuing a sizzling start to the season, with his 10th and 11th goals in just 6 games. Yzerman now trails leading goal scorer Teemu Selanne (who was held off the scoresheet) by one goal. Despite the 2-0 lead for Detroit, the 1st period was very evenly played. Vincent Riendeau frustrated the high octane Winnipeg attack all period. Detroit jumped up to a 4-0 lead in the 2nd period with goals from Yves Racine (2) and Paul Ysebaert (4). It looked as if the Red Wings were on their way to another blowout victory, but Winnipeg goalie Bob Essensa tightened up and was perfect the rest of the way, and Winnipeg solved Riendeau on the other end. Keith Tkachuk scored at the 13:38 mark of the second period (5). Only 49 seconds into the third period Teppo Numminen scored from the point on the powerplay (2) to bring the Jets within 2. Quickly after the powerplay goal, Ed Olczyk (3) scored less than 2 minutes later to make the score 4-3 with 18:45 remaining. Detroit's play in their own zone would tighten up and limit chances after that, especially on 2 Winnipeg powerplays in the 3rd period. Detroit is now riding a 4 game winning streak. prior to this game, Winnipeg had won 5 of 6 games.
Detroit 5-1-0 (10), Winnipeg 5-2-0 (10) 1st Smythe

Recap:

The Kings and Flames clashed for a 3rd time already in this young season. The teams split the first 2 games. With Al MacInnis in the penalty box, Luc Robitaille scored (7) for a quick King lead 1:53 into the game. Chris Lindberg tied it up for Calgary later in the 1st. Luc Robitaille answered with his 2nd goal, again on the powerplay (8) for a 2-1 lead into the first break. Joe Nieuwendyk tied it up early in the 2nd (4), but shortly after, Tomas Sandstrom netted his 6th of the season to put the Kings up for good. Robitaille assisted on the Sandstrom goal for his 3rd point of the night. Robitaille completed his hat trick 5:04 into the 3rd period (9) for his 4th point of the night, lifting his league-leading total to 20 (9 goals, 11 assists). Paul Coffey added another powerplay goal a minute later (2) for a commanding 5-2 lead. Theo Fleury (2) and Joe Nieuwendyk with his 2nd of the game (5) brought the Flames within 1 with 8:47 left. Mike Donnelly however capped off the scoring (2) with a pretty rebound backhand shot with 4:16 remaining in regulation. The Los Angeles Kings' powerplay was lethal, scoring on all 4 opportunities. The Flames finally gave goaltender Mike Vernon a rest, and Jeff Reese could not handle the Kings offense. He only managed 10 saves on 16 shots. However, only 2 of Los Angeles' 6 goals came on GR. Despite the score, the Flames outshot the Kings 38-16. Much of that came on 7 powerplay opportunities.
Los Angeles 4-2-1 (9) 2nd Smythe, Calgary 3-2-2 (8) 3rd Smythe
