Recap:

The Buffalo Sabres came up empty handed in their Saturday night visit to the Capital Center. The first period was all Capitals despite the Sabres killing off 3 straight powerplays. Kevin Miller scored first (2) for the Capitals, then Peter Bondra scored on a clear cut breakaway (2). Mike Ridley closed the scoring with just under 2 minutes remaining in the 1st period. Don Beaupre locked the door and threw away the key, however, Washington's defense was stifling. Beaupre only faced one GR opportunity. On the other end, Dominik Hasek saved all 3 of only 3 GR opportunities.

Recap:

On a night honoring the jersey retirement of two Maple Leaf greats, the Chicago Blackhawks spoiled the party. Greg Gilbert broke the ice late in the 1st period to put Chicago up 1-0. Steve Larmer (4) scored 5:00 into the second, and only 49 seconds later, Stephane Matteau scored a powerplay goal with Wendel Clark in the penalty box to take a 3-0 Chicago lead. The Leafs would chip away and get back in the game. Jamie Macoun scored with 6 1/2 minutes left in the second, and Doug Gilmour scored a powerplay goal (5) 3:44 in the 3rd period to make it a 3-2 game. That was the league-leading 4th powerplay goal for Gilmour. However, Chicago would answer back with a Jeremy Roenick snapshot (3) with 8 minutes left. Toronto never recovered as the only other goal was scored by Steve Larmer (5) with 12 seconds left in regulation. Ed Belfour was strong for Chicago, saving 25 of 27 shots, including 4 of 4 GR shots. Chicago moves into a 1st place tie in what looks to be a very competitive Norris Division.

Banners from Maple Leaf Garden depicting the Leafs' only retired numbers. Bill Barilko famously scored the 1951 Stanley Cup winning goal in overtime against Montreal and soon-after lost in the crash of a small airplane in Northern Ontario. Irive (Ace) Bailey played Defense for the Leafs in the 1930s and nearly lost his life when upended by Bruins' Defenseman Eddie Shore at the Boston Garden on December 13, 1933. A players benefit for Bailey on Valentine's Day 1934 morphed into the annual All-Star Game. Both jerseys were retired on Saturday Night in a ceremony before the Blackhawks Leafs contest.

Recap:

Pierre Turgeon and Glenn Healy proved to be too much for the New York Rangers to overcome before a sold out Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. This year's rivalry started out with some firepower as Pierre Turgeon and Brian Leetch (2) exchanged goals in the first 1:30 if the game. Pierre Turgeon would score again (5) 10:56 into the period on the powerplay and that is all Glenn Healy and the Islanders would need. It looked to be a rough night for goaltenders early on, however, Mike Richter and Healy would settle down. Benoit Hogue would add an insurance goal (4) with 1:21 left in the 2nd period. The win vaults the Islanders into a 1st place tie in the Patrick Division.

Recap:

The New Jersey Devils hosted the Philadelphia Flyers, looking to close the gap in the Patrick Division after a very slow start to the season. For the Flyers, Stephane Beauregard played in his first game of the season, giving Dominic Roussel a rest for the evening. It would be a rough night for Beauregard though, as New Jersey scored the first 5 goals of the game: 3 In the 1st period from Kevin Todd, Dave Barr, Bobby Holik (5), and 2 in the second from Bruce Driver (3) and Viacheslav Fetisov. Beauregard was only able to muster 19 saves on 25 shots, and was only 1 for 6 on GR chances. It was a big night for the New Jersey powerplay, scoring 3 goals on 5 chances, and Scott Stevens had 4 assists in the victory.

Recap:

The Minnesota North Stars visited the Montreal Forum for a Saturday Night Hockey Night in Canada appearance. They would get out to a fast start, as Ulf Dahlen (5) scored only 22 seconds into the game to put the North Stars up 1-0. Vincent Damphousse scored about 6 minutes later (3) to knot the game at 1. Early in the 2nd, Todd Ewen took a 5 minute major to put the Habs 2 men down. Just as Montreal killed off the 2 man advantage, Ulf Dahlen scored his second of the night (6) to take a 2-1 lead. It would get worse quickly. Derian Hatcher and Brian Propp also scored on the same Major penalty to Ewen to take a 4-1 North Star lead in the blink of an eye. Vincent Damphousse scored with 4:09 remaining in the 3rd (4) to make the game look respectable, but it was too little too late. Darcy Wakaluk was solid in net, giving Jon Casey the night off, making 30 saves on 32 shots.

The Edmonton Oilers skated into Joe Louis Arena Saturday night with hopes of extending their 2 game winning streak. Steve Yzerman and Dino Ciccarelli had other ideas. Bill Ranford started his 7th game in a row for the Oilers, which proved to be tough game for the goaltender. He was able to keep the game at bay for the 1st period, only trailing by 1 by virtue of an early Steve Yzerman goal. The 2nd period, Ranford showed some fatigue, allowing the floodgates to open on 4 goals on 6 shots which propelled Detroit to a 7-2 victory. Steve Yzerman had a hat trick (9) and 3 assists for 6 points, 1 away from tying a Red Wings record. Dino Ciccarelli had a great night of his own, adding 5 assists. Bob Probert added 2 goals (3) and an assist, which was fitting in a penalty filled game, where there were 27 total penalties called. Detroit continues its impressive start.
Detroit 4-1-0 (8) t-1st Norris, Edmonton 2-5-0 (4) t-4th Smythe

Recap:

The Great Western Forum was witness to a clash of top contending teams from each the Wales and Campbell Conferences. Rob Blake opened the scoring (4) for the Kings on a powerplay goal with Gord Murphy in the box 5:10 into the 1st period. A few minutes later, Marty McSorley went after Darren Banks and they had a heavyweight bout. McSorley was assessed an instigator and a 10 minute misconduct to the crowd's dismay. Gord Murphy made up for his costly penalty by scoring to tie the game at 1 with 1:48 remaining in the 1st. Boston then took control of the game. Dave Poulin scored 2:11 into the 2nd period (4) while Andy Moog held the Kings' limited chances at bay. Adam Oates scored (3) 7:03 into the 3rd which appeared to seal the game for the Bruins at 3-1. The Kings would come back. Luc Robitaille scored his (6)th of the season a minute and a half after Oates' goal to make the score 3-2. Later, with the goalie pulled, Warren Rychel scored (2) on a great pass by Marty McSorley to tie the game at 3 with only 44 seconds remaining. That is how the game would end, as overtime did not produce a victor.

Recap:

Despite scoring 2 early goals and playing a team who by all rights should be demoralized from a blowout loss the night before in Toronto, the Sabres let this game slip away to the expansion Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2.  Dave Andreychuk (5) and Pat LaFontaine (2) scored early for the Sabres who were badly outplaying the Lightning in the early-going.  However, Rob Zamuner and Adam Creighton (2) scored in the last 4 minutes of the period to tie Buffalo 2-2.  The Sabres came into the 2nd period appearing a bit shell-shocked and Pat LaFontaine took an early high sticking penalty.  Rob Ramage took advantage on the powerplay (2) to lift Tampa Bay to a 3-2 lead.  Doug Bodger scored on the powerplay later in the period to level things off on his 3rd point of the evening.
Things  would go unravel late in the 3rd period though as Doug Crossman scored (2) with 3:41 remaining, followed by a Roman Hamrlik goal on 46 seconds later to seal the Lightning triumph at The Aud.
John Tucker had 3 assists for Tampa Bay, and Mike Hartman had 18 PIM by virtue of fighting with Rob Ray in the 1st period, and later Gord Donnelly in the 2nd.  Pat Jablonski made 27 saves on 30 shots, but was 0/3 on GR, while Darren Puppa had an awful night with only 19 saves on 24 shots for a .792 save %, and 1 for 5 on GR.  Alexander Mogilny missed his 3rd straight game with an undisclosed injury.

Recap:

Vancouver and Winnipeg reignited their Smythe Division rivalry Friday night, both looking impressive in their first few games, however, this meeting would become one-sided.  Pavel Bure opened the scoring for Vancouver with his first of the season 6:46 into the game.  Less than a minute later, with Canuck Dana Murzyn in the penalty box, Teemu Selanne lit the lamp for his 7th of the season to tie the game at 1.
Selanne took the puck off the 2nd period faceoff and scored only 11 seconds into the period, also on the powerplay.  Exactly 10 minutes later, Selanne completed the natural hat trick to make the score 3-1 Jets.  Later in the period, Troy Murray and Cliff Ronning (2) traded goals to go into the 2nd intermission with a 4-2 score.
In the 3rd period, the Jets would get to Vancouver backup Kay Whitmore, scoring 4 goals on 8 shots including Teemu Selanne's 4th of the game and 10th goal in his 1st 6 career NHL games.  Keith Tkachuk (3), Mike Eagles, and Alexei Zhamnov scored the other goals for Winnipeg.  Pavel Bure scored his 2nd of the game (2) at the 16:12 mark to close the scoring for the night.  The 8-3 win by the Jets propels them to 1st in the Smythe Division.
Winnipeg 4-2-0 (8) 1st Smythe, Vancouver 2-2-0 (4) t-4th Smythe

First Star of the Night:
Teemu Selanne, the "Finnish Flash" added to his phenomenal start as a rookie, scoring 4 goals to lead Winnipeg to an 8-3 victory over bitter rival Vancouver.  Selanne's gameincluded a Natural Hat Trick, 9 shots, and 2 powerplay goals.  He already has 10 goals in only 6 games.

The New York Islanders were able to tame Eric Lindros and the red hot Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night.  Jeff Norton scored 2 goals (3) to put the Islanders up 3-0 in the second period.  The final result of the game was never really in doubt.  Greg Paslawski broke Glenn Healy's shutout bid with 11 seconds remaining in the second period, but that was all the offense the Flyers would be able to muster, as Healy finished the game with 29 saves on 30 shots.  Steve Thomas scored his first of the season with under 4 minutes remaining to seal a 4-1 Islanders victory, closing out a 4 game road trip to begin the season.  The victory also halts a 3 game winning streak for the Flyers.  The Islanders will host the Rangers Saturday night for their home opener.

Recap:

In the first battle between two of the top teams in the Wales Conference Saturday night, Montreal bested the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 at the Montreal Forum.  The Penguins were determined to take the rematch on their home ice in The Igloo.  The game was fairly evenly matched through the first 2 periods.  Kjell Samuelsson and John LeClair (2) exchanged goals in the first period.  In the second period, the Mario Lemieux show would begin.  He scored two straight goals to open up the period (3) to make the score 3-1 Pittsburgh.  Montreal had an answer, as Vincent Damphouse scored a powerplay goal (2) with just under five and a half remaining in the second period to make the score 3-2 Pittsburgh heading into the break.  The third period was all Penguins, however, outshooting the Habs 17-4 and outscoring them 4-0 for the blowout win.  Dave Tippett, Jaromir Jagr, and Ron Francis (3) scored for the Penguins.  The Penguins' 6th goal was scored on a breakaway by Mario Lemieux to complete the hat trick.  Lemieux upped his goal total to 4 and points to 11, good enough for 2nd in the NHL.  Jaromir Jagr finished with a goal and 2 assists, and Ron Francis had a goal and an assist.  The loss snaps Montreal's 4 game unbeaten streak to start the season.
