Recap:

2 Teams coming off very different performances.  New Jersey tied a franchise record, scoring 9 goals against Washington to get their first win of the season, and the Rangers dropped their Madison Square Garden opener to the winless Hartford Whalers for their first loss.
On an early powerplay provided by a Mark Messier trip, Tom Chorske opened the scoring 2:22 into the game.  Peter Andersson and Adam Graves (2) would score 1:38 apart with 8:40 left in the 1st to make the score 2-1 Rangers after the 1st frame.  Valeri Zelepukin tied the game for the Devils 5:03 into the second, but the Rangers scored again in a pair, Sergei Nemchinov and Mark Messier (2) scored less than 3 minutes apart with 10:22 remaining in the 3rd to take a commanding 4-2 lead.  Jane Ojanen brought New Jersey within 1 with 7:31 left, but Paul Broten put the game on ice with a Short Handed empty net goal for a 5-3 Ranger win.  The Rangers keep pace with the Flyers at the top of the Patrick Division.

Recap:

Bill Ranford stole the show, making 35 saves on 36 shots to lead the Edmonton Oilers to their 1st win of the season, cooling the red-hot Winnipeg Jets in a Smythe Division showdown.
Keith Tkachuk scored his 2nd of the season on the powerplay to take a 1-0 lead after Ranford and Essensa kept the game scoreless through the first 25 minutes of play.  Tyler Wright tied the game up with an unassisted goal for Edmonton just minutes later on a stolen pass breakaway attempt.  There were many penalties in the game, but none with worse timing and consequences than Keith Tkachuk's late minor.  Brent Gilchrist and the Oilers would capitalize on the powerplay with 2:46 remaining in the 3rd to claim the hardest win to get - their first.  The celebration once time expired around Bill Ranford was noticeably jovial as the Oilers got the monkey off their backs.
Edmonton 1-4-0 (2) 5th Smythe, Winnipeg 3-2-0 (6) t-1st Smythe

First Star of the Night:
