Recap:
Montreal started the season on the right foot at the Hartford Civic Center.  Matthew Schneider scored the first tally of the season only 56 seconds into the game.  Geoff Sanderson tied the game early in the 2nd period on a tic tac toe play from John Cullen and Eric Weinrich.  Oleg Petrov became an unlikely hero for Montreal as he would net 2 goals just over 5 minutes apart in the 2nd half of the period.  Patrick Roy was too much for Hartford to get past in the 3rd period and Benoit Brunet scored Montreal's 4th goal to secure a 4-1 opening night win for the Habs.

Recap:
After all the hype, Eric Lindros was finally able to take the ice in an NHL game.  Unfortunately for him and the Flyers, they were walking into a sold out Igloo in Pittsburgh where another Stanley Cup banner was raised before the game.
Philadelphia got into penalty trouble early as Kevin Stevens took advantage of a Flyers penalty to Kevin Dineen.  Bill Dineen, head coach of the Flyers and Kevin's father was not amused at the lack of discipline, as minutes later, Gary Galley and Dominic Roussel received penalties which provided the high powered Penguins witha 2-man advantage.  Larry Murphy would score, and that was all the Penguins needed.  Tom Barrasso would stop all 28 shots and Pittsburgh cruised to a 3-0 victory.  Larry Murphy had a goal and an assist, and Mario Lemieux had 2 assists.

Recap:
St. Louis hosted the 1st game of the Norris Division season opening home and home series versus the Minnesota North Stars.  Russ Courtnall put the North Stars up 3:16 into the game, but that is all Minnesota would get.  Discipline would become the major difference in the game.  Brett Hull scored a powerplay goal set up by Brendan Shanahan, then Phillippe Bozon scored a demoralizing goal with 8 seconds left in the 1st period to put the Blues ahead for good.  Brendan Shanahan and Brett Hull each had a goal and an assist and CuJo, Curtis Joseph stopped 32 of 33 shots.  Minnesota provided St. Louis with 8 powerplay opportunities, and goalie Darcy Wakaluk took 4 minor penalties.

Recap:
The Los Angeles Kings, minus Wayne Gretzky for an undetermined period of time, started the season in the most impressive fashion, crushing Mike Vernon and the Calgary Flames 7-0 at the Saddledome.  Los Angeles went 3 for 6 on the power play and also killed off 3 of their own penalties.  Luc Robitaille had 4 assists, Tomas Sandstrom had 2 goals and an assist, and Alexei Zhitnik had 2 helpers in his 1st NHL game.  Kelly Hrudey stopped every shot he faced, 31 total to claim victory.  Craig Berube attempted to liven the crowd and his bench up with a fight at the halfway mark of the game vs. Jim Hiller.  Unfortunately, Berube took the extra minor penalty, and Bob Kudelski put the Kings up 4-0 on the resulting powerplay.
