Recap:
The final result was never in doubt as the Toronto Maple Leafs controlled play from the get-go at their season opener at Maple Leaf Garden.  Dave McLlwain scored just over 5:00 into the game, and 3 minutes later, linemate Rob Pearson got into a spirited scuffle with Bob Carpenter of the Capitals.  Doug Gilmour added a power play goal early in the 2nd period to make the score 2-0.  Dave Ellett had a chance to put the game on ice at the 13:29 mark with a Penalty Shot, but he was stifled by Don Beaupre, who finished with 25 saves.  The Leafs would add 2 more goals in the 3rd period to ice the win 4-0.  Grant Fuhr skated to an easy shutout, making just 20 saves.

Recap:
The Tampa Bay Lightning playing in their 1st ever NHL game at the tiny Tampa Bay Expo hall.  Unfortunately for the Lightning, they were never competitive with the defending Campbell Conference Champions Chicago Blackhawks.  The first period was all Chicago and Steve Larmer netted a power play goal just past the 9 minute mark to make the score 1-0.  Dirk Graham and Brian Noonan would score in the 2nd and the Blackhawks would ride a 3-0 lead and a 29-14 shot advantage into the 3rd period.  Tampa Bay would get a taste of NHL hockey in the 3rd period as heavyweights Stu Grimson and Basil McRae would meet up early in the 3rd, and 5 minutes later, Peter Taglianetti and Cam Russell fought to the crowd's delight.  Unfortunately for the home crowd, Chris Chelios added another goal between the fights to make the score 4-0 Chicago.  It appeared that Ed Belfour would get the shutout, but with just 2:30 remaining in the game, Anatoli Semenov would score the first goal in Tampa Bay Lightning history to the delight of the few remaining fans.  Chris Chelios had 3 goals and an assist, while Steve Smith had 3 assists of his own.
Chicago 1-0-0 (2) t-1st Patrick, Tampa Bay 0-1-0 (0) t-5th Norris

First Star of the Night:  Chris Chelios with a goal and 3 assists to open the season for Chicago, defeating the Tampa Bay Lightning in their inaugural game.
